About In Other Words

In Other Words is a literary translation project run by Cultural Commons CIC, a not-for-profit organisation based in Edinburgh and Florence. We develop events, talks, and research seminars on literary translation, and host Talking with Translators, a series of interviews with translators. Our aim is to create spaces to think through the complexities of literary translation; strengthen networks between translators, readers, and publishers; and expand the cultural conversation around translation in the UK and internationally. We are now seeking to increase our activities through new events, publications, and digital platforms, supported by external funding.

  • Support event planning and logistics (venue liaison, publicity, ticketing support, etc.).

  • Research relevant grant and funding opportunities.

  • Draft funding applications based on group input and project plans.

  • Develop and expand In Other Words’ publishing presence, including setting up and managing a Substack newsletter.

  • Assist with network building and outreach to translators, publishers, and partner organisations.
